Auswide Bank’s new eco-friendly Visa Debit Card contains no conventional plastic and is made from plant-based material. Our eco-friendly Visa Debit Card replaces our standard Visa Debit Card and forms another part of our journey to become carbon neutral.
ITS PLANT, NOT PLASTIC
Our new Visa Debit Card is made from a plant-based material called PLA (Polylactic Acid) and is typically made from fermented plant starch sourced from plants like corn and sugarcane.
While it still needs elements like a microchip and antenna to perform its job, the body of the card is made from 100% plant-based material and will safely break down in landfill without releasing any toxins or microplastics.
The eco-friendly Visa Debit Cards have been carefully developed to ensure they function just as well as traditional plastic cards, including their ability to withstand moisture from weather and the occasional wash cycle mishap. They have also been certified by Visa, ensuring they meet all necessary scheme requirements.
The PLA used in our eco-friendly Visa Debit Card is manufactured in Germany, where they strictly follow all regulations in Europe as per substances handling and working conditions on the plant.
The card is then assembled and manufactured in sites in Spain which are certified by our suppliers to comply with their Corporate Code of Conduct and participate in the UN Global Compact which advocates responsibility in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environment protection, and anti-corruption.So what is the carbon impact of the PLA card? Producing PLA used 65% less energy than producing conventional plastics, according to an independent analysis commissioned by Nature-Works. It also generates 68% fewer greenhouse gases, and contains no toxins.
The Carbon Footprint index is defined as the Global Warming Potential (GWP) ability to trap extra heat in the atmosphere over time relative to carbon dioxide (CO2).
The PLA card is marked at 100 years (GWP100) as specified by IPCC in its Assessment Report 5 (AR5). Measured as grams of CO2 equivalents (CO2 eq), the Carbon Footprint index for Auswide Bank's Eco Visa Debit Card is 126g CO2 eq. Click here for more information on our Visa Debit cards.
